Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has announced he will hand over the presidency of his United Malays National Organisation party to his deputy in June 2010.
Ending months of political uncertainty, he says he will hand over to his deputy, Najib Razak.
Parliamentary member and daughter of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah Anwar, told Radio Australia's Asia Pacific program the announcement has come too late.
"People have lost confidence in the government of the day," she said.
"People have lost confidence in the prime minister and his leadership and they feel that even after such a strong message was sent, in the last general election, they've been very reluctant to basically heed the views of the people.
"Such announcements, and they're talking about 2010, it's clearly very delayed and really doesn't show much promise of a real change taking place."
