Australian cyclist Cadel Evans is six seconds off the lead in second place overall after stage six of the Tour de France, a 195 kilometre ride to Super-Besse.

Evans fought back after suffering a puncture to come third on the stage, just one second behind the winner Riccardo Ricco of Italy.

Kim Kirchen finished fifth on the stage to become the first rider from Luxembourg in nearly 50 years to claim the race leader's yellow jersey.

The previous leader Stefan Schumacher of Germany lost about 30 seconds when he fell from his bike in the final stages, and he's now in third place overall.
