Greenpeace activists charged with stealing Japan whale meat

Updated July 11, 2008 22:07:56

Two activists with environmental group Greenpeace in Japan have been charged with stealing a box of whale meat while conducting a covert operation.

The public prosecutors charged the two with theft and trespass.

Greenpeace used the meat as evidence when complaining to prosecutors that members of Japan's whaling fleet crew shipped large quantities of the meat home.

They say it amounts to embezzlement.

The government says its whaling is for scientific research purposes.
