Shooting overshadows N Korean nuclear talks

Officials in North Korea say the killing of a South Korean tourist by a soldier from the North has cast a shadow over the nuclear disarmament talks.

The six-nation talks are focused on trying to reach an agreement over how to verify if Pyongyang is telling the truth about a declaration it delivered last month on its atomic programs.

South Korea's chief envoy Kim Sook says the envoys agreed about how they will verify the declaration, as well as offering energy aid to Pyongyang and scheduling six foreign ministers' meetings.

But as the envoys held their talks, news broke that a North Korean soldier had shot dead a female South Korean tourist who strayed into a restricted military area during a morning stroll at a resort in the North.

Pyongyang told the South Korean tour operator the 53-year-old woman fled despite a warning to halt and was shot in the chest and the leg.

Seoul called the incident "deeply regrettable", suspended tours to the Mount Kumgang resort and called for a full investigation into the tragedy.
