Australia's Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says greater co-ordination is needed between military and non military efforts in Afghanistan.

The Minister was speaking outside the United Nations in New York, where he is due later today to meet the head of the UN's Peacekeeping operations.

He says a coherent strategic plan is needed to turn the situation around in Afghanistan.

The Minister says his visit to the United States aims to advance Australia's security, defence and foreign policy interests in the Asia Pacific region.

And he would not be drawn a soon to be released report by tge Commission of Truth and Friendship on East Timor which reveal that the Indonesian state is held to be responsible for gross human rights violations.

"Look I don't have intention on reflecting on, I'm looking forward and not backwards,. Our focus is on long term security, peace and stability in East Timor and our long term relationship with the Indonesians."
