Calls for Australia to accept climate change refugees

Updated July 14, 2008 02:18:19

The Refugee Action Coalition has praised calls today for Australia to accept possible climate change refugees from islands across the Pacific.

The Make Poverty History group says the Australian government's emissions trading scheme is only part of the solution to the problem facing the region.

It says Australia has a moral obligation to help small Pacific nations cope with climate change, and possibly re-house their residents.

Ian Rintoul from the Refugee Action Coalition says Australia needs to take care of others in its region.
