Australia freight emissions expected to double
Updated
New figures reveal carbon emissions from the freight transport sector in Australia are expected to increase by 100 percent by 2020.
Our reporter, Sarah Clarke, says the figures have been prepared as part of a report for the federal government.
Overall Emissions from the transport sector grew by 27 per cent between 1990 and 2006, but emissions from freight transport grew by almost 40 per cent over the same period.
That includes the greenhouse gases produced by light commercial vehicles, shipping, trucks, and aviation.
Jeff Angel from the Total Environment Centre says the sector is failing to cut its carbon footprint.
"It must reduce its emissions it can look at increased efficiency of vehicles and operations it can switch to lesser intensive carbon intensive fuels," he said.
The figures reveal air freight is the most emissions intensive, and rail produces the least amount of greenhouse gases.
