RAMSI's future under discussion in the Solomons

Updated July 14, 2008 22:35:17

A series of high level meetings have begun in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, to look at the future of the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission (RAMSI).

One of the key points of the meeting will be the development of a framework partnership agreement between the Solomon Islands government and RAMSI.

The government wants RAMSI to align itself along its policies, particularly its push for rural development.

Solomon Islands foreign affairs minister, William Haomae, has called for a new approach

"It is my desire that this consultation and the implementation processes of the agreed activity of this new approach will also honour our principal of respect for one another and respect to uphold the sovereignty of Solomon Islands," he said.

RAMSI, an Australian-led intervention force, was deployed to Solomon Islands in mid-2003 to help restore stability following five years of civil war.
