In Fiji, the interim prime minister's most senior civil servant has resigned.

The chairman of Fiji's Public Service Commission, Rishi Ram, has confirmed he has received a formal letter of resignation from Parmesh Chand, the permanent secretary to the office of interim prime minister, Frank Bainimarama.

Mr Chand held a meeting with Commodore Bainimarama late on Monday, but the reasons for his departure remain unclear.

Mr Ram says the resignation is effective immediately.

"According to the letter, he states that according to certain circumstances, he was tendering his resignation. In fact he did not disclose any reason as such, so that is open to anybody's interpretation," he said.
