Nepal to pick first president this week

Updated July 16, 2008 09:03:18

A special assembly will elect Nepal's first president this week after the country abolished its monarchy and became a republic.

The election of the president, a ceremonial position, will clear the way for the former Maoist rebels to form a government.

The Maoists, who won the most seats in the assembly in elections three months ago, say they are in talks with other political parties to form a coalition government.
