The head of America's central bank is warning that the US economy is still facing difficulties.

Our Washington correspondent, Kim Landers, reports the chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke says a weakening housing market, strained banking system and rising oil prices threaten the US economy.

But he's also tried to strike an optimistic note.

"I'm looking for the economy to strengthen next year and as it does I think that will support a strong dollar going forward," he said.

President George W Bush is also trying to boost confidence and while he's admitted Americans face tough times, he's insisting the US economy is "remarkably resilient".
