Amnesty urges Bush to make human rights statement at Olympics
Updated
Amnesty International has asked the US President George W Bush to make a "strong public statement" on China's need to respect human rights when he attends the opening of the Beijing Olympics.
Amnesty is among a dozen human rights groups scheduled to meet with the US's National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley on July 28, before the president leaves for China.
They had called on Mr Bush to boycott the games.
But he's refusing to use it as a political event, saying he's there to support US athletes and will continue to highlight concerns about religious and political freedoms in China after the games.
