The Australian dollar has slipped below 98 US cents in response to a speech by the Australian Reserve Bank governor, Glenn Stevens.

A short time ago it was trading at 97.81 US cents, after reaching a 25-year peak of 98.51 US cents overnight.

The central bank chief has told a function in Sydney there is clear evidence the drivers of the economy are slowing.

The speech appears to have bolstered expectations the Reserve Bank will leave rates on hold in the near future.
