Australian child sex suspect detained in Bali
Updated
An Australian man in his late forties has been detained in Bali after a request from Australian authorities.
Our Jakarta correspondent, Geoff Thompson, says Paul Francis Callahan is wanted in Australia in connection with child sex offences allegedly committed in Canberra more than five years ago.
Bali's deputy chief police detective, Erwin Chahara Rusmana, says Mr Callahan was arrested in Kuta around dawn last Saturday.
Detective Rusman says he fled to Bali in 2003 where he opened a surf gear business, married and had a child with a local woman.
He will remain in police custody in Bali until an extradition hearing at Denpasar District Court.
Detective Rusmana says the suspect will be deported to Australia once the extradition is granted.
