Burma extends invitation to UN special envoy
Updated
The United Nations says Burma has invited UN special envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, to visit the country.
A UN spokeswoman says the precise date and objectives of the visit have not been set, but that Professor Gambari is expected to go to Burma in mid-August.
The country's military government is facing renewed international pressure to improve its record on human rights and democratic reform.
Professor Gambari has said his most recent visit to Burma - in March - was a disappointment and yielded no concrete results.
This latest visit was originally scheduled to take place in late May, but was postponed because of Cyclone Nargis, which hit the country that month.
