US imposes arms sales freeze on Taiwan
Updated
The United States has imposed a freeze on arms sales to Taiwan following concerns expressed by China.
US military commander in Asia Admiral Timothy Keating says although there have been no significant arm sales in recent times, the freeze is an administrative policy.
Admiral Keating says while Washington is committed to the defence of Taiwan, as enshrined in US law, it does not want to destabilize the Taiwan strait
The Washington Post recently cited unnamed sources saying Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley have frozen an $US11 billion arms package and delivery of dozens of F-16 jets for Taiwan.
