The Papua New Guinea government has approved a significant joint venture with Australian gold miner, Newcrest Mining.

Newcrest and South African-based Harmony Gold Mining can now finalise their agreement to develop the Hidden Valley gold mine and the Wafi Golpu copper and gold deposit.

The companies say the joint venture will provide broader employment opportunities and corporate social investment for Papua New Guinea.

Production from the Hidden Valley mine is expected to start midway through next year.
