Solomons calls for caution over Japanese offer

Solomon Islands prime minister, Dr Derek Sikua, has called for caution over a Japanese offer to participate in the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

Dr Sikua says the implications of admitting Japan into RAMSI have to be fully considered.

"My government wishes to acknowledge this important and genuine gesture from one of our important bilateral and development partners," he said.

"However since RAMSI is a regional undertaking we would appreciate further clarification on this offer as well as the views of other forum members on this matter."

Forum ministers from RAMSI countries are meeting in Honiara for the second Forum Ministers Standing Committee.
