US led coalition says airstrike in Herat killed Taliban militants

The US military says the raid against "high priority Taliban targets" in Herat on thursday led to two taliban leaders and a significant number of other insurgents being killed.

But it says there is no evidence of civilian casualties.

Tribal elders however say dozens of civilians were killed in the airstrike in the Zirko valley in Shindan district.

The issue of civilian casualties is highly sensitive with the US led coalition admitting that an airstrike in the western province of Farah on Tuesday killed 8 Afghan civilians.

The U.S. military is investigating reports by Afghan officials that around 60 civilians were killed in two separate air strikes by U.S.-led coalition forces this month in eastern Afghanistan.
