The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's South Asia correspondent Peter Lloyd has been charged with the possession and trafficking of the drug 'ice' in Singapore.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and up to 15 strokes of the cane.
Australia's foreign minister, Stephen Smith, says consular officials have ensured that Mr Lloyd has received legal representation.
The ABC says Mr Lloyd was on leave in Singapore to receive treatment for a severe eye infection.
He has been offered bail and is due to appear in court next week.
