Arms sales to Taiwan unchanged: US State Dept

Updated July 19, 2008 10:42:52

The US State Department has clarified its stance on arms sales to Taiwan, saying that it will continue to supply items for Taiwan to maintain a sufficient defence.

The commander of the Hawaii-based US Pacific Command, Admiral Timothy Keating, said Wednesday there was a freeze on arms sales to Taiwan.

He said it was due to warming ties between Taiwan and China, as well as Beijing's concerns.

But responding to Admiral Keating's statement, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that US policy was unchanged.

The United States is late in its promised delivery of an $US11 billion weapons package, including dozens of F-16 jet fighters for Taiwan.
