US, Iraq discuss 'time horizon' for withdrawal
Updated
The presidents of the United States and Iraq have been discussing what the White House calls a "time horizon" for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
President George W Bush and Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki have talked via a secure video link.
The White House says they discussed what it's calling a "general time horizon" for reducing the number of US troops in Iraq.
A spokeswoman says the men agreed that any reduction would be based on conditions on the ground, not an arbitrary date for withdrawal.
A spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister says the leaders focused on a time frame for the complete transfer of responsibility for security from American to Iraqi forces.
The US president has repeatedly refused to give a timetable for the overall withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.
