Pope Benedict has expressed his "shame" over child sex abuse by Catholic clergy in Australia.
The Pope told a Mass at St Mary's Catherdal in Sydney he was profoundedly ashamed as a result of the abuse of minors in Australia.
"Indeed I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims have endured, and I assure them as their pastor I too share in their suffering," he said.
Pope Benedict said the victims should receive compassion and care.
He told the congregation of Australian bishops, seminarians and young religious people that those responsible for the evils must be brought to justice.
