Police kill two in latest China unrest

Police have killed two villagers in southwestern China.

The clash occurred Saturday morning in remote Yunnan province when more than 1,000 rubber growers from the Dai ethnic minority protested in a dispute over the sale of their crops.

Xinhua news agency says police were called in to quell the protest, but in the ensuing clash two were killed and 13 villagers and 41 police officers were hurt.

The Hong Kong Centre for Human Rights and Democracy says the rubber farmers were angry about being forced to sell all their rubber plant crop to local government departments at prices 40 per cent lower than in the open market.

Xinhua says the Yunnan government has sent local officials to address the planters' grievances.
