The Australian Olympic team has lost its second reigning track and field world champion for the Beijing games

Nathan Deakes is out of the 50 kilometre walk after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

The former world record holder tore the hamstring at his training base in Switzerland last week and requires surgery.

It is the second blow for Australia in the space of two weeks with 400-metre hurdles champion, Jana Rawlinson, pulling out of Beijing after failing to overcome a foot injury.

Deakes and Rawlinson won world titles in Osaka last year.
