New plan to reduce Australia's dependence on oil

A new plan to end Australia's dependence on oil is calling for better fuel efficiency standards, more investment in bio-fuels and the return of the electric car.

Our reporter, Naomi Woodley, says the 12-step plan to reduce Australia's dependence on oil by 50 per cent by 2050 has been presented by the Jamison group, which is made of scientists and researchers.

It was put together by the motoring organisation, the NRMA.

The group's David Lamb says sustainable bio-fuels should be developed from sugar crops, while fuel efficiency and emissions standards for cars must be brought into line with Europe and Japan.

And he says technology like the electric car needs to be promoted.

"Car makers need a plan. Bio-fuel makers need a plan. We all need a plan, a roadmap, to see where we're going and how to get there," Mr Lamb said.

He says if oil dependence is reduced methodically over time, it should not come at any extra cost for motorists.
