Amnesty asks Pakistan to solve disappearances

Updated July 24, 2008 08:06:13

Human rights group Amnesty International is asking Pakistan's government to disclose details of hundreds of people who disappeared after being picked up by security agencies during counter-terrorism operations.

In its latest report, Pakistan's Human Rights Commission says more than 400 missing persons reports have been filed with the Supreme Court, but many more have gone unreported as a result of intimidation.

Now Amnesty International is calling on the government, as a first step, to either release the detainees or transfer them to official places of detetention.

It then wants the government to hold to account those responsible, including security and intelligence officials for the disappearances.

The call comes just ahead of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's first visit to the United States.
