Australia's livestock industry meets over Russia ban

Updated July 24, 2008 12:08:39

Australian meat industry leaders and government representatives are holding talks today about temporary bans imposed by Russia.

The restrictions affect four Australian meat processing operations.

As of this week, Russia placed a temporary ban on meat from three kangaroo processing plants and a beef facility due to contamination concerns.

As well as Australia, operations in a number of EU and Latin American countries have been affected.

Industry representatives have told the ABC they are meeting with federal government officials today in an effort to answer Russia's concerns and have the restrictions lifted.

Russia is a booming market for Australian meat, having taken about $A60 million worth of beef so far this year alone.
