New Zealand is to give extra funds to Burma following the devastation caused by cyclone Nargis.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters says just under $US2 million will go to the devastated region to help with the ongoing relief effort.

He says some of the money will be split between the World Food Programme and the United Nations Development Programme.

The official death toll from cyclone Nargis, which struck on May 3 in Burma's Irrawaddy delta region, stands at about 77,000.

As many as 70,000 people are still missing or unaccounted for.

At the time, the country's ruling junta was widely criticised for their slow pace in responding to the crisis.
