PNG-Australia drug raids smash alleged syndicate
Updated
Thirteen people have been arrested in a drug raid in Torres Strait, between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Police also seized 100 kilos of cannabis, grown in the PNG highlands, when they arrested the group as their boat ran out of fuel in Torres Strait.
The director of enforcement operations for Australian Customs Services in Queensland, John Kerlin, says they had been watching the alleged syndicate for sometime.
"More so than grabbing a large quantity of product, what we've done is busted a bit of a syndicate that we think has been operating for some time - moving cannabis through the Torres Strait and into the Torres Strait communities and beyond," he said.
"Some of the people that have been arrested both Queensland police and ourselves have been after for sometime."
