Family of Qantas exec plead for light sentence

The family of a former Qantas executive who's pleaded guilty to price fixing charges is pleading with a United States judge to give him a light jail sentence.

Sixty-five year old Bruce McCaffrey is the only individual to face charges for an international air cargo price fixing scam.

The former Qantas freight vice president in the US will be sentenced next week.

Both his lawyer and the US government are asking the judge to give him eight months in jail and a $US20,000 fine.

Mr McCaffrey's sister-in-law has also written to the judge saying he's been made a scapegoat by Qantas, and is being sacrificed on behalf of his corporate bosses.

In another letter, his sister questions why senior Qantas managers are not being forced to face charges in the United States.

Qantas has paid a $US61 million fine.
