Preparations for the coronation of King George Tupou V are well underway in Tonga.

The ceremony will be held on Friday next week, but before that there will be three coronation balls, and a military parade as well other celebrations.

Journalist Jill Emberson says the people in the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa, are looking forward to the celebrations.

"There is a week of public entertainment - every day band after band, and dance group after dance group, has been performing from dawn till dusk," she said.

"And then at night the muka lala competition has begun and the junior towalong competition has already started too, so there's plenty of excitement and it's building daily."
