90 billion barrels of oil in Arctic: scientists
Updated
American government scientists say there are 90 billion barrels of untapped oil and vast quantities of natural gas within the Arctic Circle.
The government-run US Geological Survey says most of the resources lie offshore.
The region is shared by half a dozen countries including the United States, Russia, and Canada.
The scientists say they believe the Arctic holds enough oil to meet the current world demand for almost three years.
The report comes a week after the American government lifted a 17-year ban on offshore drilling.
