UN says AIDS pandemic has stabilised
Updated
The annual United Nations report on the AIDS epidemic says the number of newly infected people has fallen from 3 million in 2000 to 2.7 million last year.
However, it says infections are rising in many countries including China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea.
Ther UNAIDS report says progress remains uneven, and this illustrates the need for intensified action to move towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
It notes that about three million people are now receiving AIDS drugs in low- and middle-income countries.
In most parts of the world, it says, more women are receiving treatment than men.
About 33 million people are infected with the human immuno-deficiency virus and over two million people died of AIDS in 2006.
