PNG should play lead role in climate change fight: Britain

Britain is calling on Papua New Guinea to play a lead role in combating climate change.

Our PNG correspondent, Steve Marshall, says climate change is the number one issue on Great Britain's foreign policy agenda and Papua New Guinea is home to a third of the world's rain forest.

Following a recent meeting between the countries two prime ministers, the British high commissioner to PNG, David Dunn, says the tiny South Pacific nation can play a lead role in combating climate change.

"Countries like PNG, who traditionally probably haven't been central players in the global discussions, now are," he said.

"They are custodians of a third of the world's rainforests so they really have a role to play."

The British government is helping PNG forge a climate change policy ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Denmark next year.
