Athletes from around the region have gathered in Townsville in northeastern Australia, for the Oceania Masters Championships.
Sarah West reports that 463 competitors aged between 30 and 88 will be taking part.
85 year old Pauline Purser from New Zealand says field events are her forte, including "the hammer, shotput, heavy weight, discuss, javelin and the weight pentathlon."
Colin Buyers, 65, says he's looking forward to competing for Australia on the track in the 60 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and some relays.
Mona Henderson from the Cook Islands says she's inspired by the events' older competitors.
"As long as the kidney and the lungs keep pumping we'll still keep going," she told the ABC.
The championships will conclude with a half marathon on Sunday.
