Solomons police attacked by villagers
Updated
Police in Solomon Islands say they have been attacked by a group of villagers on the country's remote Weather Coast as they attempted to arrest a man wanted over a series of murders, kidnappings and arson.
The man, named as Robert Tatave, escaped during the melee, despite being handcuffed.
The police say they were pelted with stones as they waited for a helicopter to take them to the capital, Honiara, and fired warning shots to drive off their attackers.
The operation was carried out by the Solomon Islands Police Force, backed by two officers serving with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).
One of the RAMSI officers involved was hit on the arm by the stones, and slightly hurt.
