Fromelles soldiers to be buried with military honours
Updated
The remains of Australian World War 1 soldiers buried in mass graves in the French town of Fromelles in 1916, will be exhumed and given individual burials with military honours.
Limited excavation of the site at Pheasant Wood by Glasgow University in May, confirmed the presence of the remains and assessed their condition, number and nationality.
Our reporter, Alicia Byrne, says the soldiers names are still to be determined.
The minister for defence science and personnel, Warren Snowdon, says they will be buried individually, at a site near the current mass grave.
"It is fitting that these brave men will remain together, close to where they fell," he said.
Planning will start immediately, and subject to the approval of French authorities, a timeframe for the recovery of the remains will be announced later this year.
The Australian and British governments have agreed to share the cost.
