Kuwait wants foreign worker visas limits

Kuwait wants to limit work permits for some nationalities, following violent protests over pay that prompted the deportation of hundreds of Bangladeshi workers.

Dhaka officials say more than one-thousand Bangladeshis have been deported from Kuwait, and hundreds more face the same fate.

The forced removals follow recent violent protests and strikes by cleaners and workers over better pay and conditions.

The demonstrations turned violent, with some workers overturning cars and ransacking offices, until Kuwait reached a deal to end the strike.

Kuwait's social affairs and labour minister, Bader al-Duwaila, says a limit may be brought on on visas for what he called "certain nationalities", although he says cabinet plans to discuss a possible minimum wage for foreign workers.
