Bangladesh to use digital voter list in poll

Updated August 4, 2008 17:59:26

Bangladesh is holding its first polls since a state of emergency was imposed last year.

Voting is underway in four city and nine town councils with authorities testing a new digital voter list designed to put an end to the rigging at the heart of the country's political situation.

The government says the list contains no fake voters and will make fraud impossible.

The election commission says it will send a positive signal that the country is heading towards free and fair national polls in the third week of December this year.

The army backed government took over in January 2007 after polls were cancelled following allegations of vote-rigging by major opposition parties.
