Bougainville leader denies ABG takeover rumours

Updated August 5, 2008 04:42:33

The former leader of the so-called Bougainville Revolutionary Army, Sam Kauona, has denied media reports claiming a possible takeover of the Autonomous Bougainville Government.

Mr Kauona told national broadcaster, NBC, that former combatants will continue to support the ABG to implement the Bougainville peace agreement.

However he says he'll closely monitor leaders contesting the by-election, to ensure the people don't elect a leader who opposes the political and economic foundation laid down by late President Joseph Kabui.
