The Australian Governor General Michael Jeffery has thanked Papua New Guinea for ensuring the integrity of the Kokoda Track.

Major General Jeffery says this will ensure young Australians in future can learn about the sacrifices endured along the track -- a World War Two battle site -- and about PNG itself.

Some sections of the track have recently come under pressure from mining and land owner interests.

The National newspaper in Port Moresby says the Australian governor general was speaking at a Parliament House dinner hosted by PNG's acting Governor-General Dr Allan Marat.
