US Navy ship gives aid to PNG
Updated
A US Navy hospital ship has begun a two-week visit to Papua New Guinea, to provide much needed healthcare.
Our Pacific correspondent Campbell Cooney reports medical staff from the US Navy's hospital ship, USNS Mercy, have begun processing patients in preparation for treatment.
The ship arrived in Moresby yesterday, and it will spend the next two weeks providing free dental, optical and preventative health services, and some surgical operations.
Before its arrival US naval medical teams, assisted by local medical officers and medics from Australia and New Zealand, conducted clinics in PNG's remote highland regions, referring some of the cases to Port Moresby for treatment on board the Mercy.
The ship's visit is part of of the a five month cruise providing health services to Pacific Island nations, and East Timor.
