Asylum seeker's murder won't change Australia's approach
Updated
Australia's Immigration Minister, Chris Evans says the murder of a high profile asylum seeker in the Gaza Strip won't change the government's approach to refugees' asylum claims.
In a landmark ruling in 2002 the Federal Court ruled that the former Liberal Government led by John Howard did not have the power to detain Akram Al Masri after it was decided he would be deported.
Mr Al Masri was killed in Gaza last week, something refugee advocates say he had repeatedly warned would happen.
However, Labor Party Senator Evans says many asylum seekers make such claims and Mr Al Masri was deemed not to be a genuine refugee.
"We ought to meet our international obligations. We ought to meet commitments to treat people properly and to assess their protection claims but if they're found not to need protection they should be returned and under this government they will be returned. "
