US extends Marine deployment in Afghanistan
Updated
The United States will extend the mission of more than one-thousand Marines in Afghanistan for an extra 30 days until November, to maintain momentum in training Afghan security forces.
They are currently training Afghan police in the south and west of the country.
The marines are part of a 3,500-strong contingent sent to Afghanistan earlier this year for seven months.
US commanders are seeking around 10,000 more combat troops to deal with an intensifying insurgency.
