The American naval hospital ship, Mercy, is providing free treatment and surgical care to the people of Papua New Guinea.
Our Pacific correspondent, Campbell Cooney, reports the US Navy Hospital Ship, Mercy will be in Port Moresby for two weeks providing free health care services, and some surgical procedures, which the local health system is struggling to provide.
The Commanding Officer of the Mercy's Treatment Facility, Captain Jim Rice says the crew are well equipped an organised to meet the expected high demand.
Before arriving in Papua New Guinea, the Mercy had been East Timor providing medical care.
From Port Moresby it will sail to the Federated States of Micronesa, before returning to its home port of San Diego.
