The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that Beijing's air quality failed to clear its first two hurdles last week.

The ABC's Matt Brown reports from Beijing air quality tests started last week and for the first two days, exceeded the agreed limits for acceptable levels of pollution.

The situation has improved since, with the IOC reporting steady, favourable readings for the last five days.

The IOC has even cited independent tests by a media company which have shown that New York is currently showing higher levels of pollution than the Chinese capital.

Despite this, several American athletes have arrived in Beijing wearing face-masks, which is sure to embarrass Chinese Olympic organisers.
