Fuel hike gives gloomy outlook to Fiji

Updated August 6, 2008 15:47:28

Fiji's business community has given a gloomy forecast of the impact of today's fuel hike.

Today, the cost of motor fuel, diesel, kerosene and premixed outboard fuel is going up by between nine and 14 per cent, a response to soaring world oil prices.

The Fiji Employers Federation says businesses will have no option but to pass on the increased costs to consumers.

The Consumer Council of Fiji is calling for the interim government to lower fuel taxes so to ease the burden on consumers.

Meamwhile, the Fiji Islands Tourism and Hotel Association is also predicting a big impact on business, while the Fiji taxi union is warning the price hike will kill the taxi industry.
