Robberies may force PNG bank closures
Updated
Papua New Guinea's two leading banks are threatening to shut down if the threat of violent robberies continue.
The PNG Post Courier reports Bank South Pacific has already closed three branches and is threatening to close three more, saying staff fear for their lives.
ANZ says it will follow suit if the current rate of crime continues.
BSP managing director Garth McIlwain says his banks have become targets of a "new breed" of criminals, who use kidnappings to force their demands.
He says the bank has been holding daily talks with Police Commissioner Gari Baki and has complete confidence in the police.
