SKorea to build power plant on disputed islands

South Korea says it will build a solar power plant on remote islands claimed by Japan, as part of moves to reassert its sovereignty.

The 50-kilowatt solar power system would supply electricity to a small South Korean police contingent based on the islands in the Sea of Japan.

The islands midway between the two countries, called Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, have long been a flashpoint in relations.

The dispute flared up again last month when Japan announced new education guidelines reaffirming its claim to the islands, sparking angry protests from South Koreans.

Japan claimed the islands in 1905 after winning a war with Russia.

South Korea says its ownership of the islets dates back centuries.
